April 4th: Cook Ross Survey Release

Updated: Apr 19, 2019

BSAC Release: 36 Hours

April 4th, 2019

Black students of UK,

The university administration has upheld  their promise to release the findings of the Cook Ross survey within 36 hours. The instructions to find the survey are below. As stated in the Cook Ross survey, the purpose of the survey and the subsequent report was to support diversity and inclusion on campus, specifically in the area of unconscious bias trainings and initiatives. These initiatives were apart of the university’s 2020 plan. In the year of 2019, we are very aware of the fact that the administration allowed three years to pass without publishing these results. Three years where these results could have been used to help not only other administrators, but students, faculty, and staff understand why they feel the way that they do. We have all known, for a very long time, what the climate of this campus is. Now, with the publishing of these results, we have the data to validate this.

The Cook Ross survey includes findings based on ethnicity and race, ‘LGBQA’ identities, appalachian students and more. The questions of the survey were developed by the university's in-house Institutional Research team and disseminated, analyzed, and reported on by the Cook Ross company. The Black Student Advisory Council recommends the following readings, if you would like to highlight findings on race and ethnicity specifically:

Section 2: Executive Summary -- Strengths and improvements for the university

Section 3: Recommendations -- How UK can improve

Section 4: Qualitative Findings-- Real anecdotes

Section 5: Quantitative Findings-- Pages 13, 14, 17, 18, 20, 21, 24, and 28

Again, please note that these are pages which specifically highlight race and ethnicity. There is also valuable information highlighted about LGBTQIA+ students, students with disabilities, Appalachian students, and more in these sections. We truly recommend reading all of the data to truly understand the campus climate.

Section 6: Methodology and Limitations-- If you are interested in how the research was conducted.

The BSAC is still digesting these results and will release another update on our findings soon. Until then, please field all questions through our website using the ‘Contact’ form: https://bsacuky.wixsite.com/seeblackuk
